Our Misson

The primary mission of the Martin Luther King, Jr. High School for Law, Advocacy and Community Justice is to create a climate that promotes excellence in learning. Our goal is that students will develop into persons who are intelligent, critical thinkers, and supportive members of their communities. This is accomplished by everyone working collaboratively to meet the needs of students within the confines of a smaller, more personal learning atmosphere. We develop a special culture from the onset that celebrates success with high expectations for students as well as adults. The students will be immersed in the study, inquiry, and advocacy of law, requiring their involvement in community service, thus enabling them to realize their individual potential throughout the greater community. Our hope is that students will view themselves as pioneers of the new millennium, and we expect them to be counted among the great success stories of tomorrow.

Student Information Update

Address/Telephone Number Change

If there is a change to a student’s address or telephone number, notify the Attendance Office (Room 450) immediately. Documentation of a new address is required (ex. Utility bill). The school needs this information to update Blue Cards in case of an emergency.

ID Card/Replacement

Students must have their school ID Card to enter the building and they are expected to carry it with them at all times. Your ID card must be produced when requested by any staff member or School Safety Agent. Failure to produce identification is a serious matter that will be met with disciplinary action. If a student misplaces his/her I.D. Card it must be replaced immediately during lunch or after-school in Room 410 for a fee of $2.00.

Metrocard/Replacement

Student Metro-Cards are distributed in the beginning of September and in the beginning of February during lunch and after school. The Metro Cards are valid for days when school is in session from 5:30 am until 8:30 pm. If a student misplaces his/her Metro-Card a replacement card will only be issued to the parent/legal guardian of the student.. Replacement Metro-Cards are distributed by Ms. Sanchez in Room 486. If the student misplaces it or loses the card again, the student will have to wait until the next time Metro-Cards are distributed (September or February) to obtain a new card. Be aware that the cost for each metro card is $1,350.

School Policy

If a student needs to see the Nurse he/she must obtain a pass from the classroom teacher and then obtain a pass from the Main Office (Room 486). This school has a medical/health clinic staffed by St. Luke’s Hospital. Please complete the St. Luke’s participation form to enroll in the clinic and submit in Room 450. Medical care is provided at no cost to those enrolled in the clinic.

During the school day:

Cell phones will be collected by campus staff when students enter the school building and stored in a designated location until the end of the school day.
Cell phones may not be turned on or used while on school property.
Cell phones may not be used in bathrooms or locker rooms at any time.
Cell phones may not be turned on or used during instructional time, except for instructional and educational purposes with the explicit written approval of the Principal.

Failure to comply with the campus policy for electronic devices will result in confiscation of the device. Based on the nature of the violation confiscated devices will be handled on a case by case basis. Where appropriate, the following measures will be instituted in a progressive fashion:

Warnings/ confiscation of item and return at end of school day
Confiscation of item and return following parent conference
Revocation of privilege to bring item to school.

use the elevator a student must have a valid elevator pass/key card. Medical documentation must be provided to obtain an elevator pass/key card. If a student misplaces the elevator key he/she must purchase a new one.
